With time and use, these belts can wear out and eventually break. The belts that you can replace yourself are the power takeoff PTO belt, deck belt, and upper and lower transmission drive belts. The PTO and deck belts do not require you to remove the cutting deck, but the transmission drive belts do. You must replace the upper and lower drive belts at the same time, and adjust the drive pedal afterward.
Park the tractor on a level surface. Disengage the PTO lever, shift into neutral, set the parking brake and turn off the engine. Remove the key from the ignition and disconnect the spark plug wire. Remove the self-tapping screws that hold on the PTO belt guards with a screwdriver.
Remove the belt guards. Turn the deck idler pulley toward the left side of the deck to release the tension on the deck belt. Replace the new PTO belt or deck belt.
Route the belts around the pulleys and replace the belt guards. Locate the deck support pin on the rear left side of the cutting deck and pull it outward to release the deck from the deck lift arm.
Rotate the pin toward the rear of the tractor and place the pin into the hole. Repeat this on the right side of the tractor. It's a frustrating problem that can be hard to repair -- until now. Lower the deck to its lowest position Use your tractors lever to move the mower deck to its lowest position. Remove the belt guard Use a socket wrench to unscrew this from the bottom of the mower. Remove the belt from the pulley It should be easily removed from the pulley with your hands. Remove the rear of the deck Remove the two pins on each side of the deck to detach the rear end from the mower.
Remove the front of the deck There is a small pin and bar that will need to be removed to detach the front end of the deck. Remove the PTO cable First remove the pin that secures the cable to the deck -- then pull back on the cable to release it. Remove the spring Lastly, use your fingers to remove the spring near the PTO cable you just removed. Slide the deck out With the deck detached from the mower, you're free to slide it out of the way. Engage the parking brake Doing this releases tension from the belts, making it easier for you to remove them.
Remove the battery Use a pair of open end wrenches to first remove the negative terminal from the battery, then the positive terminal. Then pull the strap out of the way and set aside the battery. Remove the cradle straps Simply pull these out of the way. Remove the idler spring Slide a rope into the spring hook to easily remove it. Reference the video for further detail. Remove the transmission pulley Use a screwdriver to lock the pulley in place, then use a wrench to remove the nut.
Route the new deck belt. Reassemble by following the previous directions in reverse order. Tighten the two idler pulleys.
Attach the outer deck belt covers. Slide the deck back under the mower. Attach the spring into the deck idler pulley bracket. Using the bow tie clip, secure the PTO cable.
Insert the left and right hanger brackets. Route belt on the engine pulley and attach the belt keeper. Reconnect the spark plug ignition wire.
