Windows xp standby grey

If updating them does not work or there are no updates, you should try rolling back. This process just downgrades the version of your drivers which may return the computer to a state where standby is usable again. When doing this, you should keep track of what is going on so that you can discover the origin of the problem.

Once you know what is causing all the problems you may be able to find a better solution. Furthermore, make sure you have standard VGA drivers installed on your system. Far too many people who do a clean install of XP have their standby unusable because of this. One possible problem is your computer may just be too old! The problem lies in the motherboard chip set. If not, then you will not be able to utilize the standby feature. This should be a rare problem as most computers have these features.

Have you recently installed, added, updated or had problems with devices? I'm sure you've noticed the word "experiment" often when a check has been suggested. That is because once your sure all apm or acpi related dynamics are supported, recognized properally and loaded, and settings are as they should be, experimenting is what ya' got to do. You just have to learn, via "homework ", what experiments are safe and reversible. How to do them and reverse them.

Used copy method to recover from this but it has left me with acpi problem confusion. In Device Manager under the main "computer" list and in the category "computer" I have two devices listed, "Standard Computer" and "acpi Uniprocessor pc ".

I assume upon the replacing of and reloading of devices by hal, it was decided that my computer was a standard rather than acpi compliant and made changes accordingly. I have not pursued this issue any further as I didn't use acpi or apm features anyway and actually consider it a blessing in disguise. This has left me with a "greyed out" standby option on the shutdown screen but does not seem to effect my computer in any other way that I have detected.

I have made note of other posts related to hal and acpi though, in case I do decide to pursue this issue later. Ian F. UK 2 Bronze. Any ideas why the button might be getting greyed? Cheers, Ian. All forum topics Previous Topic Next Topic. Replies The only thing I can suggest is to maybe uninstall and reinstall the video drivers. I've reinstalled XP Pro on my system a few times, and I didn't get any functionality of the Standy and Hibernation until my video drivers were installed.

Let me know if this is any help or not!! Hiya, Thanks for the suggestion. Further suggestions very much welcomed.

Dbessis5 2 Bronze. I use a continuous connection through a cable modem. I did now own this computer when it was first bought so i'm not sure what was done to cause these systems to fail but I know they worked when it was new.

This computer came with SP3 installed already. Everything is updated including Display adapter drivers as far as I can tell. I went to the Dell sites to download the newest drivers available.

I flashed the bios to make sure I was running the latest bios. When I try to turn the power options on using the command prompt I get a message saying that its not supported.

I have plenty of room on my hard drive and I used a third party defragment tool to make sure I had large blocks of room available on my hard disk. This is running driver 6. Whats really strange is at one point I disabled most of my services and all my start up programs and I had standby and the hibernate tab was available in the power options.

This lasted for less then 5 minutes before standby grayed out and the hibernate tab disappeared again and I have not been able to recreate this. In my work my computer is unplugged a lot so this feature is very helpful.

If anyone has any new suggestions I would gladly try them. DoubleHelix Banned. Joined Dec 9, Messages 24, This is almost always a problem with the video or chipset drivers. Try reinstalling both. I have tried my best to make sure I have the newest driver for each one. I used both the Intel site and the Dell site to look up the newest drivers for my computer. I downloaded and install the newest Video driver and the newest chipset driver from Dell. Have you tried actually reinstalling the drivers?

Only download drivers from Dell for your specific model. Enter your service tag number on their support site to ensure you're downloading the right ones.

Then reinstall them.
