It is here argued Downloaded By: [University of Tromsoe] At: 21 October that the promotion of the cult of Divus Iulius and the association of his cult with that of the Goddess Roma played an important part in Octavian's consolidation of power.
It is also suggested that Octavian was actively interested in promoting the concept of his own divinity. The temple in the Forum dedicated to Divus Iulius had been promised by the triumvirs in 42 B C and construction may have started at the same time. Cassius Dio In the main, however, work on the temple took place after Actium P. Gros, Aurea templa. Zanker, Forum Romanum. See Fishwick, op. Courtesy of the Trustees of the British Museum.
The coin shows on the obverse Fig. The altar which marked the spot of Caesar's cremation is represent- ed on the left. Crawford, Roman Republican Coinage, Cambridge, , no. Octavian and the Cult ofDivus Iulius 89 As on earlier coins minted by Octavian the legends on the coins emphasise the close relationship between the deified Caesar and Octavian as well as Octavian's tenure of Republican office. The probable suggestion has been made that the issue of the coin marks Octavian's intention to renew building activity on the temple and to complete it.
The apotheosis of Julius Caesar was an innovation in Roman cult for which there was no real precedence and Caesar's divine status probably had a definite air of impermanence. According to Appian BC Although Appian definite- ly states that the temple was completed, it seems probable that it was never built and this could account for the confusion in the sources concerning the precise dedication of the temple.
Gros, op. Crawford, op. Weinstock, Divus Julius, Oxford, ,; D. If dangerously negative, he could withdraw or postpone his plans for the completion of the temple while his propaganda continued to work in more subtle ways. The depic- tion of the temple on the coins could accordingly be interpreted as a purely symbolic honour.
The depiction of the cult statue shown within the temple on Downloaded By: [University of Tromsoe] At: 21 October the coin is ambiguous and not easy to interpret. Representations of temples are not particularly common on Roman Republican coinage; the few examples which exist indicate that the usual manner seems to have been to depict the temple with closed doors while the divinity to whom the temple was dedicated would be shown on the obverse e.
It seems certain that a depiction such as the figure shown within the temple of Divus Iulius would normally be interpreted as the cult image and a representation of the divinity to whom the temple was dedicated.
Trillmich, op. Simon interprets the figure as the portrayal of Octavian in his function as augur, consecrating the area where the temple was to be built Augustus. Since Octavian had been elected augur in 43, this interpretation is not impossible. However, the position of the statue within the completed temple makes it more likely that the figure would generally be regarded as a depiction of the cult statue.
